A Kiwi’s Day at Indianapolis
Kiwi Scott Dixon is the first New Zealander to win the Indy 500 in his sixth attempt for Chip Gannasi Racing.
Only two other New Zealanders have ever raced the Indy 500 - Denny Hulme (1967, 1968, 1969, and 1971) and Graham McRae (1973).
Brazilian Vitor Meira was second with American Marco Andretti third.
“I can’t believe it,” an ecstatic Dixon said. “We seemed to have a real strong car today.
“There were so many yellows in the race today it was hard to get into a rhythm.”
Dixon picks up $US2.5 million for the win a sum that gives him the biggest single payday for a Kiwi and surpasses golfer Michael Campbell who claimed $1.25m for winning the 2005 US Open.
Strangely, Dixon’s lottery-style prize comes in a year when there is no other prize money available on the IndyCar circuit. Under the merger with Champ cars, it was agreed to switch the competition to a revenue-sharing model, where each team is guaranteed a minimum of $US1.2m per car.

I greatly admired Mario, tolerated (only just) Michael & have yet to form an opinion on Marco. But I swear, if he gets out of the car one more time & subtly, implies that the “team” let him down, I will throw him in that complaining category with his father.
He has been literally given one of the best seats available in the series, he needs to shut up, listen & learn from those around him…..& gets some wins on the board before opening his mouth.
Peter, you mean to say Marco is like Bruno?
Oh, wait, that can’t be Bruno has a GP2 win now.
