“Actions Detrimental to Stock Car Racing”

“Actions detrimental to stock car racing” is an all too familiar refrain heard around NASCAR. Hardly a week goes by without someone in the Cup or Busch garages getting tagged with a summons, trial and judgement that removes points and cash for doing some kind of somethin’ that is “detrimental.”

Then there is what some would call “detrimental” and some may find comical, myself included.

Virginia’s Langley Speedway runs the Dodge Weekly Racing Series under the NASCAR banner. Casey Wyatt is Langley Speedway’s winningest (6) Late Model Division driver this season.

This past weekend he finished an apparent second (explaination in a second) in the 75 lap Late Model feature to Anthony Warren.

(The setup) Casey Wyatt drives a Chevy. The track was hosting “Dodge Night at the Races,” sponsored by local Dodge dealers.

(The Punchline) As a track employee handed Wyatt a Dodge Motorsports hat after the race she was “cursed at” while Wyatt threw the hat on the ground and stomped it flat.

(Inset laugh track here___) Wyatt was also sanctioned for “Inappropriate language and actions detrimental to the Series sponsor.”

I guess Dodge and NASCAR don’t like their hats flat. Wyatt will sit out the next two weeks for this bit of comedic relief. And the real kicker is Wyatt’s “apparent second place.” Wyatt was later declared the winner, when Anthony Warren was disqualified for using an illegal shock absorber.

No word on his penalty but obviously it will be assessed for actions detrimental to some kind of somethin’.
