I’ve considered Ron Dennis somewhat of a pompous windbag, but of one thing you can be certain: They do not arbitrarily shop for drivers. Mika and Coulthard spent nine years with the team, and there can be no doubt that they will make every effort to keep Juan, and especially Kimi.
Ron would be foolish to consider anything else, including a fading Schumy, regardless of what Mercedes would like.
The Schumie rumors have never made sense to me. Why Merc would swap out one youngster and one that is relatively young for Michael makes no sense.
If I were to bet I’d say Michael will finish out his last year riding that Prancing Horse then call it quits. He has nothing to prove at this point.
Having said that, there is a lot of smoke, so you never know.
One last thought on Schumy moving: It’s unlikely that he would find a new home at McLaren or Renault, but don’t be surprised if he winds up at BMW in ‘07 or as early as next year. And probably for less money than he makes at Ferrari. It’s not all about the money, it’s the ability to win again. He has no or little chance of wining on Bridgestone’s and if he can win titles with three different teams it would just add more glory to his career. One year of development in’06 and a BMW/Schumy title in ‘07.
That would be stunning!
