CGP - Hamilton Wins, Assumes Championship Lead
The “when will Hamilton win” question has been answered, emphatically.
While all around the Lewis Hamilton were involved in ambitious overtaking moves, driving penalties and tire problems, the McLaren rookie kept his car away from the walls and sand traps to take his maiden victory and an eight-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship.
He also solidified his position as McLaren’s #1 - something that has been discussed within the team itself - at least until The USGP next week.
World Champion Fernando Alonso will count the race as one to forget, running wide several times at Turn one, suffering a ten second stop/go penalty (entering the pits when they were closed) and being stuck behind slower cars for much of the day.
Alonso eventually finished seventh but not before being passed by Super Aguri’s Takuma Sato with two laps remaining. (to the champion’s horror and Sato’s delight)
It was both a satisfying and worrying day for BMW Sauber, however.
Kubica ran off line on lap 28 and hit the inside wall before catapulting across the track and flipping on to the side of his chassis. Initial speculation indicated he may have suffered a broken leg. A hospital spokesman later said he was unhurt “conscious and in good spirits” but would remain in the Crash House for observation overnight.
The sight of Kubica’s destroyed BMW didn’t deter teammate Nick Heidfeld, he held second place and brought the team’s other car home behind winner Hamilton, in another good result for the German manufacturer.
It was also a poor day for Ferrari. Massa jumped to fourth off the grid and was running well in the points before being disqualified - along with Giancarlo Fisichella - on lap 52 for ignoring a red light while exiting the pit lane while the first Safety Car was on track.
Kimi Raikkonen dropped two places at the start of the race and eventually finished in fifth position, without ever really looking likely to threaten for a podium finish.
Props go to Alex Wurz who rode his Williams to third place that was aided by a one-stop strategy. The Austrian started 20th on the grid to collect his team’s first podium of the season.

I damn near cried laughing when I saw this headline at Autosport.

How bloody stupid were Massa & Fisi? Two experienced drivers ignoring a red light, while the rookie Kubica is sitting there at the end of the pit lane doing the correct thing.
Ferrari are nowhere near where they need to be in relation to the McLarens…& Kimi just hasn’t brought together the switch in teams (& tyres) the way I thought he would.
BTW, if Schumi is going to start flying to the long haul races, I’m wondering how long he will be content with sitting on the pit wall. Despite my past opinion that his retirement was final, I am beginning to have my doubts. Give him a season or two & we may see him put the helet back on.
I’m wondering how soon it will be before the animal protection society puts up a squawk about Davidson killing an example of Canada’s national animal.
I’ll wager a small amount with anyone it was a woodchuck as opposed to a beaver. They look very similar, less the paddle tail. Any photos of the vic available?
I haven’t seen any pics of the formerly rotund, now flat, critter.
“How many wings can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wings?”
THAT, is the question.
By George, George! your right. In the picture in the link above, the critter has no paddle tail. Is that photo from the track on Sunday?
If I recall, Damon hill had one run at his Williams a few years back… 96?. He didn’t hit it & joked afterwards about overtaking it under brakes.
Bernie is such a dickhead, I wanted to show the guys at work how the lateral head protection worked in Kubica’s terrifying shunt. It really is amazing how that much energy can be disappated & yet he escaped with bruising & a sprained ankle.
Alas, go to YouTube & it’s marked. REMOVED AT REQUEST OF FOM.
