Tentative: probationary: under terms not final or fully worked out or agreed upon; “probationary employees”; “a provisional government”; “just a tentative schedule”

I would agree with Princeton’s definition above, and will state up front I thought Harvick was gone long ago, but why sign a “tentative” contract on Tuesday only to make an official announcement (and presumably a real contract) Friday?

Nextel Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress Racing have reached a tentative agreement on a contract extension to keep Harvick in RCR’s No. 29 Chevrolet for the next several years, RCR sources have told The Charlotte Observer.

RCR has reserved a news conference slot Friday at 2:45 p.m. Eastern in the infield media center at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, site of Saturday night’s Crown Royal 400.

Don’t pay attention to that slight explosion you may have heard, it’s just my Toyota theory self destructing. Amazing what winning a couple races does for team chemistry.
