Doesn’t F1 Have Enough Sebastiens Already?

Follow the bouncing ball and count along with me:

1. Sébastien Vettel of STR and latest and youngest F1 Winner.

2. Sébastien Bourdais also of STR and three time Champ Car champion.

3. Sébastien Buemi finished second in GP2 for Arden International.

What, you say he’s on the sidelines of F1 (read companion events) currently competing in the GP2 Series. Don’t doubt me my friends.

Remember, the Earth is covered by 2/3rds water, but Full Throttle covers the rest.

Including the Gulf Daily News (GDN) in Bahrain who reports Sebastien Buemi may make his F1 debut this year.

According to the paper via Buemi’s uncle and that based on recent discussions around the F1 paddock, a race seat may open up with Toro Rosso for the remainder of this season, and Buemi could be the one who takes it.

“The possibility of Sebastien being in F1 this year is very real, but it depends on a lot of factors that are out of our control,” explained Humbert, who is the brother of Buemi’s father Antoine.

The seat is contingent upon Red Bull’s David Coulthard stepping aside for one or more events in this his last year before retirement allowing Sebastian Vettel to slide into that seat and opening the spot at STR for Buemi.

“Of the new generation, Sebastien is the only one who can say he is really ready (for F1),” Red Bull motor racing adviser Dr Helmut Marko has said.

Added Humbert: “The scenario has been of great talk around the paddock in recent weeks, but word after the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday was that Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz told Coulthard he wants him to finish the season. We are currently not sure about this, so there is still the possibility for Sebastien racing this year.”

I’d hate to be the fly in the ointment, and disregarding boss Mateschitz words, but I fail to see Coulthard stepping aside willingly.

Even if pushed, which based on the Mateschitz quotes appears unlikely, I don’t think he’d go quietly into the night.

We’ll see.

STR has scheduled a test for Buemi at Jerez today in the STR3 car, and then on Friday in an RB4.

  1. Although retiring as a driver, DC has a full time job with RedBull F1 as a consultant. He will be staying in their employ. Methinks he may have to step aside if asked.

  2. By his latest driving efforts it’s apparent to me DC has taken his gold watch and mentally left the game behind. Regardless of Dietrich’s alleged promise to DC, if the team decides to give Buemi a ride this year what are DC’s alternatives; especially if they pay off his contract for the rest of the year? Nada.

  3. Umm…four time champ car champ. And why not Sebastian Loeb to F1? What the heck, why not.
