F1 Honda: John Surtees’ 1967 Monza Win (Video)

Monza 1967: The 1967 season was known as the “Return to Power”. This was because engine capacity had been increased from a paltry 1.5 litres to 3 litres.

It was also the last year we would see F1 cars unadorned by wings and racing in their national colors.

It was also the year the Ford Cosworth DVF engine was built for Lotus. Introduced in the Dutch GP, it started an incredible revolution in Formula One.

Although winning first time out in Holland, it was too unreliable for Clark or G. Hill to mount a serious bid for the title. The 1960’s were a dangerous time and already that year Lorenzo Bandini had died from injuries sustained in a crash at Monaco.

By the time, the F1 circus arrived at Monza, Denny Hulme was leading the championship by 3 points from his team mate Jack Brabham. Jim Clark was some 20 points behind Denny.

The eventual winner was the Honda V-12 of John Surtees. It was the marquee’s second win, the first being the 1965 Mexican GP won by Richie Ginther.

Still popular in Italy due to his years with MV Agusta, the crowd went wild when John pulled off a win with the new car.
