After the trials and tribulations Dale Earnhardt Jr.s has, either been a victim of or contributed to, this season at least someone has decided to speak to the root of the problem.
Tony Eury Sr., director of competition at DEI and former crew chief of the #8 car has made the most obvious observation in light of the swapping of crews and cars with teammate Michael Waltrip during the off season.
“I guess we made a bad move over the winter, and our cars down there in the 8 shop weren’t as good as we thought they were,” Eury said. “When you got something good I guess you should leave it alone. We won six races with him (Earnhardt) last year.”
Some would call this an epiphany, I prefer to think Tony just slapped his forehead and screamed, “what the hell was I thinking!” It’s been fairly apparent since Feb. this was a mistake from the get go and many, myself included, questioned the logic last fall.
If Little E’s fans are looking for any quick fix they better heed the words of boss Tony:
“We know we have problems we have to fix,” Eury Sr. said. “We don’t want to make problems somewhere else trying to fix one problem.
“We don’t need to make quick decisions. We made a quick decision and we paid for it. We’re not going to make that mistake again.”
To me that sounds like the decision has been made to cut their losses, ride out the season as is and tally up the destruction after Homestead.
And then a clean broom sweeps clean. See ya Waltrip enjoy your new ride with Gibbs or Evernham.
