Foyt “Four” Coming to NASCAR
As part of this years silly season in NASCAR the name A.J. Foyt IV has popped up from time to time. There have been various teams connected to Foyt the elder’s grandson, the most prominent being Ray Evernham’s Dodge outfit.
The first part of Foyt IV’s move to the “door slammers” is complete. Effective with the last IndyCar event next week he will be released from his contract. His three years driving for his legendary Grandfather has been fairly undistinguished, finishing 18th in points last year and is holding the 19th spot this year. To date, his career best start is sixth at Chicagoland Speedway (last year) while his career best finish is ninth, posted at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Kentucky Speedway this season.
This quote from Grandpa Foyt I find interesting:
“Anthony wants to try his hand at NASCAR,” said family patriarch and Indy car team owner A.J. Foyt. “He’s learned a lot since we began working together in 2002 but now it’s time for him to learn from someone else. He’s still young and I’m sure some of the advice I’ve given him will start to sink in when he hears it from someone other than me. I admit I’m a little nervous about trusting him to the world because he is young. At the same time, I think we both realize it’s time for him to spread his wings.
Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but does that sound like the kid, he’s only 21, displayed a bit of the hard head when advice came from the old man? Maybe not, but if true it can be blamed on geneology. He’s inherited Grandpa’s legendary temper and attitude.
UPDATE: Although rumors flew that Foyt IV was headed to Evernham Motorsports as a development driver he has been “clipped” by Akins Motorsports to drive the #38 Great Clips Dodge for the last four Busch Series events this year and all of the ‘06 season.
