Franchitti Wins IRL Pole, Bolts to NASCAR?
That’s what CBS Sports is claiming.
According to the outfit that brought you Dan Rather’s “fake but accurate” stories the current pole sitter of this weekends Peak Antifreeze Indy 300, and potentially IRL Champ for 2007, will run, not walk into the arms of Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2008 season.
Purportedly Franchitti will man the wheel of the #40 Dodge, a ride that until now was in the hands of David Stremme. He was let go concurrently with the loss of Coors Light as the sponsor of the car and there was some question whether the team would continue without a primary sponsor.
Which raises the obvious question, is Dario bringing a load on cash with him? (Canadian Club?)
(I could get all snarky and suggest it will be the “Ganassi Racing #40 Dodge Presented by Ashley Judd” but I won’t)
Whatever the case, it may be a few days before learning the entire story, ’cause no one is talking for the record, least of all Ganassi: “Right now, all I want to concentrate on is winning this championship and then winning the (Grand Am Sports Car Series) championship next week in Utah,” Ganassi said Saturday. “All this other stuff can wait until after that.”
It should be an interesting pairing at Ganassi, the Great Scot and Juan “Latino Piloto is Muy Bueno” Montoya.
Toss in the arrival of Jacques “Motor Mouth” Villeneuve and you have a veritable mini-United Nations in the making. And another excuse for the xenophobes to twist their g-strings in a bunch.
(I forgot Kangaroo Meat, who should make it into Cup next year and the French-Canadian Patrick Carpentier for GEM Racing)
