Hantz Group 200 Goes to Rookie McDowell

Pole sitter Michael McDowell pushed his way past James Buescher during a G/W/C finish to win the ARCA RE/MAX Series season finale at Toledo on Sunday afternoon. It was McDowell’s fourth win of the year and the first at a short track as he dominated leading 166 of the 200 laps.

Frank Kimmel celebrated his ninth series championship (eighth consecutive) by just starting the event, mixed it up on the last lap with Marc Davis, a rookie making his first start for Joe Gibbs Racing Development. Davis finished fourth and Kimmel was fifth.

(The now infamous) Michael Simko finished a strong third.

Michelle Theriault, recently named to NASCAR’s 2007 Drive for Diversity program, parlayed her 24th starting position into an eleventh place finish a lap behind the leaders.

McDowell is scheduled to test next week for Michael Waltrip Racing at Kentucky. He also has been mentioned as a possible replacement for David Reutimann in the #00 car next year when Reutimann takes over Dale Jarrett’s #44.

  1. Who can resist a girl with a Glock? That was an impressive finish for her on the short track. If I’m not mistaken, this was only Michelle Theriault’s sixth ARCA race, but she had over 200 wins in her quarter midget career.
McDowell is a very promising driver. Until his accident at Talladega, he was in the running for the championship. He’s good, but I don’t think MWR would start him in Cup. What about David Stremme?

  2. I have to admit RJ I was a little surprised when Glock decided to sponsor Michelle, they have to be commended for “thinkin’ outside the box.”

Toledo is a very tuff track and she did very well considering she had never set foot in the place prior to Saturday.
