Indy Announcer in “Crash House”

INDIANAPOLIS — Longtime Indianapolis Motor Speedway announcer Tom Carnegie was hospitalized Wednesday after he became ill during activities leading up to the Indy 500.

The 85-year-old Carnegie was interviewed onstage as part of Community Day. Afterward, he began feeling sick and was taken to Methodist Hospital.

“I’m doing very well and actually feeling a lot better,” Carnegie said in a statement released by the track, adding that he expected to be released Thursday or Friday. “I’m anxious to get back to the speedway.”

This is Carnegie’s 60th year as public address announcer for the Indianapolis 500, earning fame with his deep voice and distinctive phrases such as “Heeee’s on it!”

Carnegie was honored with his own day at the speedway last week.
