Infineon: So much for the Busch “Slump”
As Kyle Busch racked up 4 Cup wins the buzz was he would bulldoze his way through the season and stand an excellent chance at his first championship.
Over the last few weeks, during which his points lead was shaved a bit, the talk was all about Busch stretching himself too thin running so many events each weekend. (as if jetting via private luxury plane is “taxing” physically!)
So much for the “slump!”
The kid is not only back to his winning ways but did so after a miserable start in practice and qualifying and drove to the front from 30th on the grid and dominated, leading a race high 77 laps, while doing it.
The “pseudo-ringer,” David Gilliland came in second and if not for it being the dominate Busch in the lead might have had a shot at the win.
Note the “pseudo” tag. Gilliland can’t rightfully be called a road course ringer, While he’s Yates Racing regular driver, he has had extensive track time at Infineon running in the old Winston West Series and various Late Model under-cards at the track.
Obviously he did Yates Racing proud.
Something that can’t be said for the “genuine” road course ringers, the best they could do was Ron Fellows‘ 29th place finish for DEI (”thanks” to Harvick), the remaining ringers finished 35th or below.
Hey… was that a loud chorus of cheers I heard as Kyle doffed that white hat in victory lane?
Why yes… yes it was. Californians, always need to be different.
More later…
… and the more comes from the rumor file. Early in the weekend stories floated Mark Martin would be replaced at DEI in 2009 with his understudy Aric Almirola. A smart move I would say, Almirola hasn’t had nearly enough track time, the “teacher” should get less time than the “student,” but I digress.
Dustin Long has added to the story by claiming Hendrick will replace Casey Mears with Martin next year.

Another “pseudo-ringer” did pretty well yesterday until his day was cut short be a dive bombing Sadler.
Yepper, the Devil Racer was headed for a top five if not a win, but I didn’t count him as one considering the vast amount of RC experience he has with 2 V8 championships under his belt.
Not a big fan of Kyle Busch, but he can sure drive a race car.
Kyle’s got me converted into a true believer. All of the race contact bitchin’ and incidental whining by the competition is sheer envy.
He’ll eventually develop a hardcore racing fan base that will (gasp!!) exceed Junior’s. Even tho he doesn’t have the magical last name.
Bigger than Junior? Stretching it a bit aren’t you George?
