Is Mr. Bean Employed at TRD?

Mr. Bean

Childlike, sometimes ingenious, but in general a likeable buffoon are the most common descriptions of the U.K.’s Mr. Bean.

His most endearing quality, in a comedic sense, is his ability to take the most convoluted path in solving life’s everyday problems.

There is no “point A to point B” in Bean’s life, getting to the end point involves every other letter of the alphabet and a couple numbers as well.

Which brings me to Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and their erstwhile standard barer Michael Waltrip Racing.

In trying to right Waltrip’s ship, Jim Aust, president of TRD, looked to this weekends stop at Phoenix to be, well… their Phoenix and rise above the ashes:

  1. Psst… Mikey swiped Reut’s car chief. ;)
For the Busch, it’s a whole nother ball of wax. They’ve got the truck engine (or pretty darn close) on that side, which surprisingly is making a difference. I guess it either wasn’t good enough or allowed for Cup, so they’re on new ground with it. Well, that and competition to get into Busch races hasn’t been exactly “tight” this season either.

Why they need to do the whole tear down, inspect, weigh and rebuild deal I have no idea. I guess they feel the need to start from scratch and go from there. I do recall that they said it would be Charlotte before they would see results from that, so I guess well see come the All-Star race or the 600.

  2. Psst

  3. I can’t say what exactly, else I’d be mimicking those ESPN commercials. Yeah, you know which ones.

Only thing I know is that they’re saying they’re different, but what specifically I don’t know. Could very well be that that is just the excuse they’re using for the press hounds, vice admitting they were just way over their heads trying to keep up with 2 car models.

  4. I vaguely remember last summer a couple articles about Toyota submitting their Cup engine to NASCAR tech for final approval so I don’t think it’s a “press ruse.”
