Jeremy Mayfield, the Doctor Will See You Now

NASCAR wants driver Jeremy Mayfield to undergo a mental and physical evaluation. In a new court filing, NASCAR says it wants Mayfield to meet with three different doctors to determine whether he suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or a drug problem.

NASCAR said Mayfield has tested positive three times for methamphetamine use.

Mayfield has denied using the drug while spinning tales of grand conspiracy theories, complaints of being “watched” while providing urine samples and charging NASCAR is just out to “get the little guy” out of the sport.

Frankly I’m surprised this request for a physical exam, in addition to another random sample considering the last was on July 6th this year, has taken so long.

Things to ponder:

1. Mayfield gave an interview in late July - the 24th to be specific - stating he was letting his hair grow out in order to give a sample to be used for a hair follicle test.

“We’ve been letting [my hair] grow out, grow out, grow out every week because we are in the process of going to do that [hair test],” Mayfield said on the radio show. “But to be an accurate test, it has to be so long. As you can see, it’s pretty long for me right now. I have not cut my hair since May 1.” [Boldface mine.]

At the time I wrote:

The scientific consensus is hair collected at the crown of the head grows on the average of approximately 1.3 cm (or 1/2 inch) per month.

Based on Mayfield’s statement his hair should be only one 1 to 2 weeks short of being long enough for testing purposes as at minimum labs require 40+ milligrams of hair or approximately 50 - 70 strands that are up to 3.9cm (or 1.5 inches) in length.

That time frame places any potential hair test on or about the 10th of August, give or take. (using the July date not May 1st in an effort to give benefit of doubt)

That begs the question, where is it?

Mayfield has not only had more than sufficient time for a valid hair follicle test but has had an additional six weeks of hair growth since early August.

Hell, by now he must have a head of hair to rival a post-hippie, early 1970s, Glitter Rock artist.

Jeremy, the world awaits your hair test, and NASCAR awaits your presence at a doctors office. Don’t forget to ask the Doc for a lollipop for being a “good little boy.”

2. The second thing to ponder is directed at the Mayfield lemmings who hold tightly a the theory Mayfield popped positive because of his use of Adderall to control attention deficit disorder.

For the sake of argument say that’s true.

As seen in the recent court case filed against high school coach David Jason Stinson in the death of one of his players Stinson was acquitted of all charges by a jury of twelve in deliberations that only lasted 90 minutes.

Part of the defense teams claim was the player, as testified to by his own mother, was sick on the day of his death and he was taking Adderall on a very hot and humid day.

As indicated the jury found that claim to be credible and acquitted coach Stinson.

That raises this question for the lemmings: If Mayfield has never taken Meth and has popped positive for amphetamine by use of Adderall do you really want Mayfield or any driver operating a 200mph vehicle, in the 100-130 degree heat of the cockpit - as Stinson’s player was on that hot day of practice - that could potentially led to a death from heat exhaustion?

Also consider stimulants such as Adderall can increase alertness, attention, and energy, which are accompanied by increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing.

Absence any type of illegal Meth usage it clear Adderall in of itself may be a drug that should never be allowed by drivers of potentially lethal race cars.

Oh, did I mention Adderall also “can be addictive and dangerous when misused?”

  2. [...] Two exit questions: When will the judge rule on NASCAR’s request for a physical exam of Mayfield and when will Mayfield take a hair follicle test as promised? [...]
