Johnny “Come Lately” Benson.
Grand Rapids Michigan native Johnny Benson must have liked the hoopla and adulation surrounding his first NCTS win last week at MIS. Benson has done it again for his second win in two weeks at the Milwaukee Mile.
“Lo and behold, I didn’t think it would come this quick,” Benson said Friday night after making it two in a row with a victory in the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200.“It’s a little overwhelming to have two races come and unfold the way they did,” said Benson, who led 47 laps and outlasted second-place finisher Mike Bliss with a 2.35-second margin of victory in front of an announced crowd of 27,764. “It’s been a great week.”
Which only proves it’s better to come late to the party than not come at all.
Benson, who will celebrate his 43rd birthday Monday, is the oldest of six drivers to win back-to-back races in the 12-year history of the Trucks Series. The others include Edgerton Wi native Rich Bickle (1997), Necedah Wi native Jay Sauter (1998), Kurt Busch (2000), Kasey Kahne (2004) and Kyle Busch (2005).
Team Australia driver Marcos Ambrose had his best finish yet in the Craftsman Truck Series, finishing 18th. (See full Story here)
Evernham Motorsports development driver Erin Crocker finished 25th after a late race accident with points leader Todd Bodine.
