Kiwi Driver Badly Injured At Bathurst
A New Zealand driver has been badly hurt in a warm up race for this weekend’s Bathurst 1000.
Mark Porter’s Holden Commodore was hit by David Clark’s Falcon after he clipped a wall near the esses and was left stranded in the middle of the track.
Kiwi Motorsport enthusiast Thomas Nicholson saw it happen. He says Porter’s car was given a hefty wallop and that left a lot of debris on the track. There has been no word from officials on how bad his injuries are.
The collision happened on the 12th of the 14 lap Fujitsu series race. The Hamilton (NZ) driver was also scheduled to partner with Dale Brede in Sunday’s Bathurst 1000, diving for Team BOC Falcon.
Related V8 News: Matt Halliday has shaken off jet lag to impress in the first practice session at Bathurst. Last weekend Halliday was driving the New Zealand A1GP car in the Netherlands, and just a few days later he is rocketing around Mount Panorama.
He was 11th fastest in the first practice session on Thursday, one behind Greg Murphy.
Halliday is more than happy with the first run back in a V8 car. He says the first practice session is always a good chance to get himself back into a completely different car.
Mark Skaife and Garth Tander were the quickest over the mountain on Thursday.
UPDATE: Both drivers involved in the Bathurst crash have been listed in critical condition but Bathurst Base Hospital spokeswoman Heather Mackinnon couldn’t gave any further details.
This weekend’s race was already being conducted in a sombre mood as drivers remembered nine-time Bathurst winner Peter Brock who died in a car crash last month.
