Mayfield Offers His Definition of Crass

As my loyal readers know I have sided with Ray Evernham during the ongoing Jeremy Mayfield Saga™. I will concede Ray hasn’t been the innocent bystander either, when the final guillotine fell on Mayfield it could have been done in a more professional way.

Being a firm believer in earning respect goes hand in hand with giving it, Mayfield painted a very large target on his Nomex by running to the press and whining about the boss. For that reason and his past history of being a less than perfect teammate I’ll stick by the basic position of Mayfield getting exactly what he asked for.

As many of you know just after Mayfield was fired he quickly ran to the justice system to seek legal redress to what he thought was an unfair action. Certainly his right to do so, but it also seemed to be another case of acting (via a lawyer and not face to face) before any discussions were held. My assumption was affirmed when a settlement was reached immediately after the hearing was held and a financial “arrangement” was concluded.

As expected portions of that court hearing are leaking out into the public domain.

In the complaint filed with the court, Mayfield and Mayfield Motorsports Inc., which handles the driver’s business affairs, claim: “For significant periods of time [Evernham] has been, at best, an absentee manager and owner, largely because, … at some point in time Ray Evernham had entered into an [sic] close personal relationship with a female driver he engages to drive on NASCAR’s ARCA, truck and Busch Series. That relationship became a subject of considerable discussion and distraction in the Nextel Cup garage area during the 2006 season.”

His legal premise is he shouldn’t have been fired because of an “absentee owner,” as if Ray’s presence as owner would make any difference. I’d love to see “exhibt A” proving that.

If I were the judge I’d ask one question of Mayfield’s shyster; Where is Teresa Earnhardt on race Sunday’s? And before you #8 fans jump my ass there are many other owners that can be plugged in. She’s just more “absent” than most.

What really tweaks me was Mayfield’s dragging Evernham’s alleged “relationship” with Erin Crocker into this mess. It’s not enough to say he was absent and leave it at that? Couldn’t evidence be found the #19 wasn’t provided the right parts, crew chief or other team members to stay competitve?

Apparently not, and it smells of the stupid tricks lawyers play all the time. Mayfield either thought up the stunt on his own or followed sheep like to his overpriced ambulance chaser’s legal tactics.

One word, Crass, sums it up.

I should say Evernham isn’t without blame. In a brief filed by his shyster Ray made the ludicrous claim that “Mayfield brushed the wall at Indianapolis and ‘based on my experience, I believed that Mayfield’s conduct in wrecking the car was on purpose.’”

Another unprovable and cheap shot, but at least he wasn’t dragging someone’s personnel life into it.

Whether they entail a marriage certificate or not all divorces are ugly. This one obviously is and for all concerned, and without any further interference by the legal beagles, this one should be at an end.

Except; The first time a Mayfield driven car comes close to wrecking an Evernham Dodge the ink stained wretches will be all over it.

  1. Marc - I suspect (and it’s only a guess) that Mayfield wants to make sure he gets paid for the rest of the season. There’s a lot of money at stake (at least five figures, maybe six), so of course he’s going to blast with both barrels.

That doesn’t mean it’s right or fair, but there it is.

Also note that Mayfield and Evernham settled this thing quickly. I doubt that Evernham wants to answer questions about Erin Crocker under oath.

  2. John if you hadn’t noticed the two “combatants” got together just after the court hearing was held and before leaving the courthouse. The judge never made a ruling on Mayfield’s legal request because they settled their differences at that time.

Yes Dude the truth is out there, but it damn sure can’t be found in accusations of alleged personnel affairs in a legal briefing.

One question I have remaining Dude. Will Mayfield be called as a witness by the plaintiff in the Evernham divorce?

  3. Depends how bitter the ex is.  Of course, if she really wants to go for the jugular… "Ms. Crocker, are you now or have you ever…"
