Mr. Smith, Bruton Smith, Call on Line One

Line ThreeBy now everyone has heard Bruton Smith has grown weary of the NIMBYs living in his Concord neighborhood and has threatened to move LMS and the millions of dollars the speedway generates locally.

Just as the cacophony from Smith and the NIMBYs has grown loudest a call comes in on line one for Smith. Caller ID indicates it’s from any number of sources all who have the perfect spot for the new & improved Lowes Motor Speedway, complete with four lane drag strip.

Not knowing the area it’s hard for me to judge which tract of land would be best but if money is the chief consideration (not that it is for Smith) I’d say the Anne Springs Close Greenway site is the best bet. Reportedly road signs are in place, albeit with a little modification. (”a piece of silver duct tape, cover the “Green” part of Greenway, and write “Speed” on the tape with magic marker”)

But as I said I’m in the dark on the local lay of the land but Bruton isn’t and he claims to have already spoken to two un-named parties, and visited two other sites, interested in the LMS relocation.

Why do I hear Humpy Wheeler striking up the promotional band for Lake Wylie?

  1. So iis Bruton physically going to pick up and move LMS? Ha…

  2. Actually, that’s a topic of great debate. What would be done with the new facility?

Would it be a mirror of the current racing surface, or would SMI take the time to think it through and give not only the fans something different to watch, but a surface/configuration that would allow the drivers to put on an exceptional race as well.

I can’t imagine that they have nothing on the drawing board, for future use, in case they wanted to build a new venue.

Whatever comes of it, you can bet it will be a facility that is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else out there. They’ve seen what’s worked at their own tracks, as well as the newest venues on the circuit (Kansas and Chicowgo). That being the case, facility-wise it would no doubt be the crown jewel of the series, and worthy of being in the heart of NASCAR.

  3. why not move it to calverton ny. long island deserves to have a strip.

  4. I hope he has the financial clout to buiild a new facility right on top of the town line that Lowe’s is currently in.
That way they will suffer the consequences of the track with no taxable benefits whatsoever.

And if the sport gets a better, state of the art facility as well, what’s not to like?

  5. Not much George, I hope he dumps all the NIMBYs and pulls up stakes.

It kind of reminds of of Tony Stewarts “noise” problems around Eldora Speedway.

When asked about the complaints he in so many words told them to go to hell, he would buy every house in the area and keep the track as it is.

  6. Hey Bruton and or SMI. Nobody will even reply to any of my email questions about a track in the West. I’ve heard serious talk about a track in or around Denver Colorado.
We have everything else but a real NASCAR track. We have half of a state flat and empty.
PLEASE let’s move lowes to Colorado. Just kidding, but let’s build a track!!!! There is a huge demand for it and I’m sick of the news stations acting like NASCAR doesn’t exhist
    NASCAR IN COLORADO !!!

  7. NASCAR IN COLORADO?!!!

  8. Keeo dreaming Jeff, the locals fold like a wind blown deck of cards and both Humpy and Bruton are staying right where they are WITH a new drag strip to boot.

As far as Denver, well, that ain’t lookng so good last I read. The city council of what ever city it was in so many words told ISC to head out of town before sunset, to use an Old West phrase.

It might still happen but I have serious doubts.

  9. Go Bruten, go!!!!!!! I hope he moves LMS to a county nearby Charlotte but far away from Concord. The city council cut his throat first and then cut the residents next. They didn’t even ask them what they thought. Bad planning for Concord to have housing so close to race track anyway.ANd not so smart to the folks complaining about a dragstrip to buy a house close to the speedway. Dah! MAKE THEM BEG and THEN LEAVE, BRUTEN!

  10. dbranch - Um that would be Bruton not “Bruten.”

Not that I disagree with your overall statement. Well… other than your dream Bruton is going anywhere. LMS will stay as it is as long we are both alive.
