NASCAR and the Silliest of Seasons
Leaving aside the seriousness of the ongoing Chase for the NASCAR Championship will find you in the land of speculation, rumors, fake, but accurate stories and the now two year saga of the #6 “Triple A” machine piloted by… er, um, piloted by someone, take yer pick. But odds are you may have a better chance at Powerball or selecting the exact location of a earth destroying meteor hit. (my cash is on Bangladesh, they get hit with everything)
The “6 Saga”® (term now registered by the Half-Vast Staff of FF), that may eventually surpass the Guiding Light as the longest running soap opera, has taken on a new twist according to Scene Daily. Negotiations have been ongoing between John Henry, owner the Boston Red Sox, and Jack in the Hat to purchase a portion of Roush’s Mongol Horde.
Sparking the rumor, then a partial confirmation, was a sighting of long time friends Henry and Roush together at NHIS during Sunday’s Cup event. That led to Roush releasing a statement Tuesday that confirmed discussions about selling an interest in the team were ongoing.
“They started getting a little more aggressive about a NASCAR positioning within the Fenway Sports Group, which is their marketing and business arm that’s been making some investments in businesses,” [Roush Racing President] Smith said. “They let us know late spring or early summer that they were looking a little more seriously about making investments and would we be interested in having some discussions with them about selling an interest. So we’ve been having these discussions for most of the summer.
Very interesting, and given the weight of the parties involved, I would rate this as something more than run-of-the-mill speculation. I would also caution Smith made plain Jack had no intentions of giving up control of any part of the Roush empire. Understandable, Jack is still healthy at the age of 66 and maintains his love of the sport and his business enterprises. He’s not ready to retire to a life of flying his twin vintage P-51 Mustangs.
I can’t leave this story without one snarky reference: Jack remember history when contemplating this deal with the Red Sox Owner. Remember Babe Ruth!
