NASCAR Joke of the Day

I would have titled this the New York City joke of the day however the place holds an “honorary” position as joke of the day in so many ways it would have been redundant. But I digress.

The NASCAR joke of the day comes via NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg fielded a number of calls on his weekly 77 WABC-AM radio show concerning ISC’s abandonment of Staten Island as a future site of a NASCAR style race track.

“My personal opinion is, if people want to go to NASCAR, why not let them?” he told a frustrated pro-speedway caller from Staten Island. “I’ve always liked economic development in the city.”

Say WHAT?! I’m not sure if Bloomberg had a straightman to set up that joke or he was working the room alone but I feel he has a potential shot if they produce another season of Last Comic Standing.

Talk about too little too late. Maybe, just maybe if he would have added his support a year ago vice 4 days after the track was shit-canned the project may have had a slightly better chance.

While on the subject, check this headline of a couple days ago: “NASCAR fans say culture clash killed the track”. Some supporters of the track say urbane New Yorkers are “intolerant of and unfamiliar with the sport popular down South.”

Gee… ya think? How do you argue against that idea with quotes like these that have been uttered over the course of the last year:

  1. Now Marc, you need to differentiate between clashes a bit better. This was not a culture clash, but a cash clash. As in ISC realized if they had to grease every outstretched palm required to get this deal done, the cost would have been over the billion range as opposed to a mere 500-700 million.

The stated estimated cost of the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx is 1.2 billion. If they TELL you 1.2 billion I guarrantee the final cost will exceed 2 billion.

    Welcome to the rotten apple.

  2. Culture clash… cash clash… bottomline is they are the same.

It’s good-by to the rotten apple and hello to New Jersey.

  3. Joisy (you need to learn to pronounce and spell it properly) is where the thing belonged in the first place. The politician/criminals in Joisy have a demonstrated ability to get business done. And there are many politician/criminals based on the number that have been convicted and/or under serious investigation.

But the right location is NJ, from a logistics/traffic issue alone. The environmentalists will go nuts, but the P/C know how to quell that faction, when there is money to be made by all.

  4. George the Pols in Joisy are already rubbing their hands together with thoughts of cash payouts on a track to be built next year.

And in another shocker… Wal-Mart also passed on Staten Island. They no doubt ran into the same type of biased treatment that ISC did. “OMFG, a discount store. On Staten Island… never!!!”
