NASCAR: Mother Nature Can be an Evil Wench

‘Cause it’s the new mother nature taking over
It’s the new splendid lady come to call
It’s the new mother nature taking over
She’s getting us all, she’s getting us all
- The Guess Who

In a week filled with universal condemnation over L’Affaire Busch the Elder the second to last thing NASCAR needed was another rainy race day.

The last thing?

Red Meat thrown to the conspiracy nuts (as if on cue they scurry from the woodwork!) as the yellow for rain came out just as Jeff “The Hated” Gordon was about to be passed by Ryan Newman. At least they will think he was about to be passed as they fled to the nearest keyboard to post the latest “example” of NASCAR’s love affair with Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports.

As for the “cheated,” Newman followed up his second consecutive pole winning week with a second consecutive bridesmaid finish, cursing Evil Mother Nature as he did so.

Suggestion: Tech inspection at Michigan should include extra time spent looking for “snakes” that must reside within the Joe Gibbs rides. Both Stewart and Hamlin have been consistently fast and consistently dogged by bad luck, admittedly some of their own doing, but for the most part snake-bit by things out of their control.

Fifth and sixth isn’t anything to sneeze at but when Hamlin can dominate the event in laps led, possess a 5 plus second lead at one point, fight back from a flat tire and have your progress back to the front cut short is has to ware on you.

ODDITIES NOTICED: It’s not unusual to see 11 of the top 13 finishers members of the Bow-Tie brigade, that’s been the story all year. But look further down the order.

Scott Riggs in 18th led 7 other Mopars across the line.

What are the odds of that happening again at Michigan?

What are the odds of another appearance by Mother Nature at MIS? I’d say about 7 out of 10 at this point.

  1. Newman had a great car. “Conspiracy Theory”?? I don’t think so. Newman said it was raining down there on the last lap before the caution. I think with Hamlins car and Truex JR’s cars that he probably should be happy where he finished, and he seemed like he was.

  2. I live about 30 minutes almost directly south of MIS and the weather here at the last four scheduled race times has been perfect. Of course it will rain Sunday. I’ll be standing in it.

  3. As you know Charlie I grew up in Detroit and have MIS rise out of the Irish Hills was a highlite of my teen years. I was in the stands when Ronnie Bucknum won the first Indy event and Cale Yarborough won the first NASCAR event and attended about 95% of the events held there until going into the Navy in 1981.

If your 30 minutes south that must put you in the area of Grassy or Deep Lake or a bit further south.

It also explains why you head down to Toledo. Do you often head up 127 to Spartan Speedway?

  4. Marc

I have never been to Spartan, but it’s on the list. Of course, so is Spa and Laguna Seca and ….. you know. Were you at MIS for the Can Am? I have a friend who always rubs that one in my face.

  5. You should add Mosport to your list also, by chance they are hosting the second event of the NASCAR Canada Series this weekend. Not that I’m suggesting you attend, just nmoting its presence.

Back in Michigan you should hit Dixie Speedway near Flint MI, it’s a reasonably short hop up I-75.

Also add when time and funds allow Berlin Raceway. Johnny Benson Jr’s home track
