NASCAR Nations’s Universe is Still Spinning
Didn’t notice the stars in NASCAR Nation’s sky stop rotating did you?
There’s a good reason for it. The release of Jeremy Mayfield by Bill Davis Racing (effective after this season) is hardly universe stopping news. Mayfield has consistently under performed his teammate Dave Blaney in presumably identical equipment.
Davis had an interesting comment upon Mayfield’s release:
“We have had great support from Toyota on this endeavor, but it takes more than just manufacturer support to compete on this level,” Davis said. “It takes a tremendous amount of additional sponsorship support that just did not materialize as we had anticipated.”
With all the rumors flying I may have missed it in the chaff but I haven’t seen any reference to the Mayfield team having sponsorship problems.
It makes you wonder if his primary sponsor 360 OTC has laid down the law, “change, or else,” it wouldn’t be the first time nor the last.
It doesn’t help Mayfield’s position any when his record includes only 5 wins in 411 starts with much of that time spent in two of the sports top teams, Evernham and Penske.
Then there is The Baggage. Mayfield’s departure from Evernham was something less than peaceable with unneeded dirty laundry being aired during court proceedings over payments still owed.
With NASCAR smack in the center of its Silly, slash, Rumor Season I suspect the media to be in a mad rush to be the first to float a Mayfield-to-somewhere article. Not to mention a Kyle Busch to Davis rumor.

Marc, I can’t find it now, but I do recall reading that Mayfield’s ride was having sponsorship problems. If I remember correctly, 360 wanted results before they would put out more cash, but Bill needed more cash to get better results. They were in a Catch-22. I also recall 360 wanted a driver change, as they thought that maybe that might have been the problem instead of not enough cash.
Yepper, my neighbor to the north. That was back last spring, and they wanted to bail out then. I “imagine” although it was never reported, that Mr. Lawyer (on Davis’ behalf) informed them that backing out in the middle of the season wasn’t in their best interest.
That being said, I’m sure there is a year/year performance clause, or at least in this start-up case.
A catch 22, yes indeed.
Also, how can Kyle be “going to Davis” when he started informing all parties that were interested that he will be signing with “The Coach”, who coincidentally will be making the jump to the Far East, according to many quality sources.
Hmmm… Interesting time to be raising the flag, for sure.
Oh, and see… looks like I wasn’t the only one bitten by the edit comment link.

Propeller ransom has been increased.
Go ahead raise that ransom Luke, I purchased a new one at Propellers R Us. So you know what you can do with the one you have. (sit and spin!)
As an aside, I removed the edit comment function til I figure out why
YOUcommenters can’t get it to work.Beats me, but my northerly neighbor up there had a dup too. Which I assume that plugin was the cause, since the second comment was the first plus a little more.
