NASCAR Passing Up …
Is NASCAR passing up a chance to make an extra buck? Not likely, there’s a report out NASCAR’s evil twin the ISC is increasing its financial stake in Chicagoland Seedway.
Is NASCAR passing gas? You could say that considering the wrist-slap “Padding Toss” (Formerly known as “Helmet Toss”) received yesterday.
Actually, according to NASCAR, passing is up, as in what an auto race is supposed to be. A competition between man and machine where at any given time during a race one four wheeled vehicle passes another four wheeled vehicle based on the driver and that vehicle’s capabilities.
This is opposed to a vehicle that is still a vehicle but the driver is… well, the driver is what has been dubbed a Lucky Mongrel

One cause for the INCREASE in passing may be the DECREASE in competitiveness between the front and the back? One stat I’d love to read is the average difference between qualy times of the top ten and the bottom ten. If it has increased that might lead to more passing, especially in the 500 milers where only a dozen or so cars finish on the lead lap.
But I agree, the qualy times among the 43 cars usually is very close. The top 20 are typicaly within .1-.2 of each other, depending on the track.
That’s an interesting concept George.
Off the top of my head (the thickest part they tell me) I haven’t a clue what that stat would be.
I doubt NASCAR even computes it, if they did you probably would never hear about it. The wrong result would negate what they are trying to prove.
