NASCAR Phenom: Mission Accomplished

Joey LoganoNASCAR’s latest phenom, freshly minted 18 year old and NNS rookie par excellence did what he and Joe Gibbs Racing expected him to do.

Qual in the top ten, stay out of trouble on the difficult Dover high banks, not wreck anyone and bring it home with the fenders on (except one dented in a pit road clash with Kahne) and a very respectable sixth place finish.

Not much more could be expected from Joey Logano, phenom or not, the wins will come and I suspect very soon.

Meanwhile, the year long “phenom” Joe Gibbs Racing continued it’s dominance in the series.

Denny Hamlin kept JGR’s NNS winning season on the roll by winning the Dover event. The win marks eighth straight time this year that a full-time Cup driver for JGR has won a NNS event.

Hell, the dominance extended to friendly pre-race betting on Logano’s finish. Hamlin won $200 in side bets with Kyle Busch and Michael Waltrip when Logano finished sixth. Hamlin had bet the youngster would finish in the top seven.

“It was fairly uneventful,”
Hamlin said. “We just bided our time at various times during the race and pulled away at the end. If you can get out there in clean air, your car can really take off. We definitely improved on our car, and I think our car was the strongest it had been all day at the end.”

Second place runner Carl Edwards had nothing for the race winner over the final 28-lap green-flag run.

“It was all right,” Edwards said of the result. “Second’s no fun. It’s not what we come here for. But my hat’s off to Denny. He did a great job. I just wish I could have got up to him.”

AND FINALLY: Is it only me or does anyone else see the irony in the “ride & park” operation of Mike Harmon finishing dead last, dropping out after only 34 laps for “overheating” and being sponsored by RaceFumes.com?

Maybe it is just me, as stated earlier, my Flux Capacitor isn’t working up to full “Flux” so I may be operating under a stronger state of confusion than normal.

  1. I don’t catch the Nationwide races to often, but I had to tune to see what everyone was talking about with this Logano kid.

Congrats to him on a great first race. Great finish and kept the car in almost mint condition.

Other than that, I thought the whole race was pretty good.
