NASCAR Press: I Beg to Differ!
Witness a south Florida TV stations headline for this weekends NASCAR events:
“South Florida World Racing Capital This Weekend.”
Well, that’s true. If your a south Florida station looking to pump-up local egos, not to mention local tourism.
However, the World Racing Capital this weekend is in Macau, China with the 55th annual Macau Grand Prix. This years edition features the final round of the World Touring Cart Championship, Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix 42nd edition, Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, CTM Macau Touring Cars, Formula BMW Pacific and for the first time an exhibition of Drifting.
The entire weekends schedule is available here and you can get all the race results at FT’s sister publication Asian Motor Sports.
IN OTHER NEWS YOU CAN LOSE:
The U.S. Air Force will shift its Nascar backing to Gillett Evernham Motorsports from Wood Brothers Racing and cut its appearances as primary sponsor to four from nine races in the stock-car league’s top series.
Financial terms and the length of the contract with GEM (GEM as long as Evernham doesn’t sell-out) weren’t announced in a statement issued by the Air Force. Its logos will appear on the No. 10 Dodge Charger driven by Georgia native Reed Sorenson. The Air Force will be an associate sponsor, with its logos less-prominently displayed, at other races.
And finally, Darrel Waltrip has a plan. A plan to “save” NASCAR.
As many of you are aware Waltrip’s aggressive driving and outspoken style earned him the nickname “Jaws,” a reference to the 1975 film of the same name.
His retirement hasn’t led him to be any less outspoken, or in this case, anything close to the mark in how to “save” NASCAR.
While I agree with his suggestion to eliminate all testing as a way to save teams cold hard cash, his thoughts on opening the season each year on New Years Eve at, of all places, Fontana is rooted in shear lunacy.
As any of you know I’m not of the clique that claims Fontana should be stripped of it’s second date, no business with a national footprint would leave the most populace state and one with so much importance with the MSM.
But Fontana? On New Years Eve?!
Waltrip has been suckin’ too much of his home state’s fermented mash.
