NASCAR Tradition: SHOCKING - Almost

If one only reads headlines, like this one, “Southern 500 event to return to Darlington for ‘09,” it would be a shock to ones senses to think NASCAR is not only returning to its roots, but also returning to Darlington on Labor Day.

Which only goes to prove those that depend on headlines alone are fools.

According to track president Chris Browning only the historic Southern 500 name is returning and will be appended to the Mother’s Day event in 2009.

One wonders, is it a tip of the hat to the “good old days,” or a function of current economic conditions and a hedging of bets in case no title sponsor can be signed before May of next year?

I’m a cynical old bastard aren’t I?
