NASCAR, We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ NASCAR
Who needs NASCAR when we have Speedcar, a Bernie Ecclestone, FIA sanctioned stock car series. (Bernie haters can insert guffaws here. Right beside mine.)
And just who is that man in #07?
Take your pick it could be any one of the following, drivers aren’t associated with car numbers: Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson, Gianni Morbidelli, Mike Bliss and Tony Ave.
The image provided, and all the rest, are of the testing session conducted at VIR this week.
Jean Alesi, veteran of 201 F1 starts most notably with Ferrari said:
“It is one of the few cars I have dreamt of driving, and it’s like I expected - lots of fun and really powerful! For me it’s a real pleasure, and having fun in a car is so important for drivers. When you have fun with the car you have a fun championship.”
Fun… it must have been, he posted the best time of 1:27:88 with a qualifying setup in the car.
Mike Bliss turned in the slowest time (1:33:47) however he is the development driver for the series and as John Davidson (Blogger at Fast Machines and PR Director at VIR) confirms his slow time was “due to his being used to set up the cars than to any difference in driving abilities.”
The first Speedcar Series championship season is scheduled to begin in November, with 24 identical cars competing on tracks across Asia and the Middle East.
As the image shows you would be hard pressed to tell the difference from a Speedcar and what will turn laps at LVMS this weekend. It looks to be a direct copy of what comes out of the shops around Charlotte.
And if it has nothing else going for it, there’s no CoT-like splitter of cow catcher. That could be a good thing.
On the other hand with Bernie acting behind the scenes, if its possible he can stay behind the scenes, Speedcar may be powered by recycled french fry oil in the future.
