NASCAR’s Diversity Sits on Daytona Pole
In a mild surprise, it is a Gibbs Chevy after all, a product of NASCAR’s diversity program Aric Almirola won the pole for Saturday’s Busch Series season-opening Orbitz 300.
“This is a thrill, I probably won’t sleep much tonight but I’m excited about tomorrow and feel like we have a great shot at getting our first win,” the Cuban-American Almirola said.
Jason Leffler, who has had star-crossed Cup career, put a little shine back into what has been a lack-luster coming out party for Toyota by placing his Camry outside Almirola with the second quickest time of the day.
The top five is filled out by Jon Wood in a Wood Brothers Ford, Martin Truex Jr. and Leffler’s Toyota teammate John Andretti.
Other notables in the field are Juan “Dont’t Call Me Pablo” Montoya in 16th, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 20th and defending Busch Series champion Kevin Harvick 31st.
Full Throttle’s pre-season pick for Busch Rookie of the Year Marcos Ambrose lines up 37th.

Well, the Trucks provided a little party for Toyota this evening too.
If you can count that, I guess. 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th isn’t a bad showing. Then again, it’s the Trucks and not GN or Cup.
Regarding Ambrose & I’m showing my limited Busch knowledge, do they run any road courses?
I’m curious as I expect Marcus (& JPM) would run well
Peter, the Busch Series makes its third annual stop this year at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course, Mexico City and for the first time this year at a circuit named after a famous F1 driver who son’s name shall not be mentioned.
Can you guess who and what circuit?
BGN qualifying was fun to watch! ESPN did a nice job, and no DW is a plus these days.
Love the new paint schemes, etc.
Hmmmm I’m guessing your refering to our favourite French Canadian musician (No not Celine Dion)
Canada? didn’t America buy that of the Russians or was that Alaska? I always get those two confused.
Seriously, I think a few people will get a thrill out of watching JPM & Ambrose throw a car left & right. I will watch Ambrose’s results at that event with great interest.
We bought Alaska from the Russkies.
Ambrose did fairly well Saturday, he finished 16th with the top 12 places filled with high bucks Cup regular teams.
BTW, here’s JPM as you’ve never heard him before, unless you’ve smashed his head with a camera before.
