No Way to Treat a Racing Icon

Trivia Image

A large part of any sport’s mystique resides with its history.

Unfortunately, like the rest of us mere mortals, the iconic figures that are part of sport eventually pass onto a Heavenly ballpark, football pitch or racetrack in the sky.

Luckily, the racing icon pictured left is still with us. However given his advanced age I question the propriety of having the scantily clad model in such close proximity thus risking acute heart failure.

As he did so many times during a long and storied career he survived this “brush with death” and is still with us today. He also survived to be the subject of another trivia question, just who is this racing icon?

Often called “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship,” he won 16 F1 events with 16 pole positions and 24 podiums overall.

He once made a cameo in the original version of the James Bond film “Casino Royale” as a driver.

His father placed 14th at the 1924 Indianapolis 500 in a “Fronty” Ford.

Although a vociferous and outspoken critic of Michael Schumacher he ranked Schumacher co-fourth (with Tazio Nuvolari) in the pantheon of all-time great drivers, behind Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna and Jim Clark.

That should do it, if you don’t know by now you’re just not paying attention! Besides that face is so recognizable you should have had the correct answer before now.

Unless you were, ahem…. distracted!

For extra points and a chance to have your name entered into the Dale Earnhardt Jr. draft lottery (provide your own 10 million dollars) what car is our racing icon sitting in?

Good Luck!

  1. Green eyed monster get you marc?

If Stirling Moss (& his Viagra) can still get a chance to pick up who are you & I to stand in the way. He’s a ex F1 driver from the golden era, he’s earn’t it.

  2. Where was that photo taken? Goodwood? That’s Mika Salo’s old Tyrell 1994/5? in the back ground.

  3. Stirling certainly looks happy, I think the green eyed monster has definately gotten to you marc. :-)

  4. I swaer I have not done a google image search, is the car a vanwall, if so the colour has me confused, British racing green was the colour of the day

  5. Ah-hah!!!

I confused an expert, or are your eyes spending too much time on the dolly?

It’s not Goodwood but something close. It’s the 2006 version of GPLive in the U.K.

And yes Sir Sterling looks happy, but I can’t imagine what’s of such interest he’s looking to the left.

The car is a Maserati 250F. The one in the background is the last ever Tyrrell.”

  6. Marc if I’m wrong about that Tyrrell I will gladly donate $100 bucks to the Guide Dogs Association of NSW/ACT (I’m serious)

The give away is the nose & the front wing it’s not raised, the airbox & the Yamaha donk apart from the livery being circa Mika Salo Nokia 94/95, I’m 99.9% certain that is the 95 car, there is no way that is the 1998 car!

If you recall that was the year before the BAT takeover, Harvey Poslethwaite designed a mono post support for the front wing that looked different to the entire field. They ran Tora Takaki & that useless plodder Ricardo Rosset - which was why Ken left the team early as he wanted to run Jos Vestaphan (spelling?) instead of Rosset. The livery was white with black, Tora’s sponsor PIAA was all over it. The 95 ran a Yamaha & the 98 “The last Tyrrell” a Cosworth.

I don’t have time to do a image search on Google but but I will wager that $100 bucks for the Guide Dogs, a very worthy charity for the sight impaired, no pun intended they are a charity close to my heart.

BTW, cut me some slack on Stirlings car, I got the colour right! Red! should have known it would be an Italian car of that era.

Bugger it, I did a image search, here are some pics of all the Tyrrell’s for the 90’s period we are debating. I’m right,

Phew!!!!! Didn’t want to lose my status of expert.

    Google Images

  7. There’s a car in that picture?

  8. What you can’t see that car Matt?!

Look closer, it’s just below those two “bumpers.”
