Rainy Days and Mondays
(with apoligies to Paul Williams & Roger Nichols)
The weather has been the only winner the last two days in Brooklyn, Michigan. For a second straight day, persistent rain has forced NASCAR officials to postpone the Cup race at Michigan.
Now the race is scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 in the morning. It’s the first time in NASCAR’s modern era a race has been pushed back and run on a Tuesday. The ‘97 Talladega race was postponed ’til Monday, then rescheduled for two weeks later to allow teams to compete in Sonoma.
Wonder if there has been a run on the sale of alarm clocks? With a 10am start people will have to roll out of the motorhomes earlier than usual. I hope Denny’s has a delivery service for the Grand Slam Breakfasts I would hate to see the field roll off on empty stomachs.
On the other hand if Earl Barban, a crewmember and spotter for David Gilliland, is an example of what went on Monday empty stomachs won’t be a problem.
The current forecast (8:30pm) calls for clouds with scattered light showers tonight. Temperature in the lower 60s. East winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.
Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the upper 70s. East winds 5 to 10 mph until midday becoming light.
As one who grew up in Michigan and was lucky enough to escape the snow and tornados I’m reminded of a common phrase uttered by the natives: “If you don’t like the weather in Michigan, wait five minutes…”
I’m guessing the race will get started, not necessarily at 10am, and be called for weather sometime after lap 125, well past halfway.
If not the predicted joint event with the International 500 will look very Nostradamous-like.
Just a thought… but wouldn’t it be delicious to have Juan
