R.I.P. Rafael Sperafico

Champ Car fans may be familiar with Brazilian Rafael Sperafico who contested occasional Champ Car events from 2003 to 2005. Brother Ricardo drove for Dale Coyne Racing in 2005 with his best finish of 8th coming at Denver that year. Brother Rodrigo, and a cousin, Alexandre, also competed in Champ Car on occasion.

Rafael was killed in a horrific accident Sunday during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. The accident occurred during the last race of the Brazilian Stock Car Light championship (BSCL).

GloboEsporte has posted a video of the accident and it serves as a reminder of just how safe NASCAR has made it’s cars.

The secondary hit Sperafico took as it careened back across the track reduced the cars width by what appears to be a quarter of the original. Obviously BSCL officials have some safety improvements to do.

The Staff of Full Throttle send its condolences to family, friends and fans of Rafeal Sperafico.

  1. Despite taking a hit directly in the drivers side door (always a bad senario) the side impact structure does seem remarkably light, at least it does from the video.

  2. It sure does, I can’t help believe the side impact structure on that car is nothing like what NASCAR demands.

  3. It is always a sad day when we hear of a race drivers death. Condolences to family, friends, and fans.

  4. Ricardo and Rodrigo were Rafael’’s cousin.
I knew Rafael, he was a very sweet guy, its been all very sad.
Its almost unbelivable what happened, i was there, and saw everything.
All his family needs right now is support.

At that point of the cars were bout 200 km/h
    R.I.P dear Rafael
