Robby Gordon Turns Cunucklehead!
(NOTE: The term Cunucklehead is usually reserved for fans of the Vancouver Canucks hockey club, but after Robby’s “performance” Sunday it just kinda fits, EH! - ed)
I love this description of the races ending: “Marcos Ambrose was cheated out of his maiden NASCAR Busch Series win in a diabolical ending at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.”
Controversial no doubt. Exciting certainly, but “diabolical” is a bit over the top. But it’s expected, the quote comes from the Tasmanian Devil’s home country of Australia.
“Man did it get rough,” race winner Harvick said. Um… er sure did, especially when Harvick himself punted Scott Pruett in the closing stages causing mayhem in the field.
But Harvick’s actions were just the opening curtain to Wild Child Robby Gordon’s final act.
Gordon punted Ambrose from the lead after a restart with one lap remaining. Gordon was retaliating after he slipped past Ambrose with five laps remaining but the pass was deemed illegal as the course was yellow at the time of the move.
Subsequently NASCAR officials ordered Gordon to be removed from second place, an order he ignored earning him a two lap penalty and an 18th place finish.
As Gordon was acting the fool by ignoring three consecutive displays of the Black Flag the race for the Checker continued with RCR Kevin Harvick pulling away from Canadian, Busch Series “rookie” and CCWS star Patrick Carpentier. (BTW this wasn’t Carpentier’s first tin top ride, he competed in the 2006 CASCAR Super Series event at Cayuga Speedway last year.)
Max Papis finished third, Canadian Ron Fellows was fourth and Stephen Leicht rounded out the top five.
Assuming NASCAR doesn’t sit Gordon down for a week he and Harvick can have a “do over” next week at Watkins Glen’s road course. If he is given a week’s vacation you can fully expect the roar of “NASCAR would never sit down so-and-so who’s in the top 20,” whimper to start shortly after the announced penalty.
More later… when the juicy quotes come out.
UPDATE: And the quotes cometh:
MARCOS AMBROSE: DID YOU KNOW NASCAR TOLD ROBBY GORDON TO GO TO THE BACK?
“Yeah, I knew that and I knew that he was going to try and hit me. We were talking whether we should pull over and let him pass, but you know, I’ve got two laps to go and I’m trying to win the race. If somebody is going to take me out, they’re going to take me out. If they feel strong enough, they’re going to do it. I’m not going to go into it.
I’m disappointed; I promised myself that I wouldn’t get mad. This is an opportunity for me over here. I’m thankful for what I’ve been given and today is a bad day, but tomorrow we’ll look to next week. I’m pleased that I’m here and holding my own against some of America’s best.”
ROBBY GORDON: WERE YOU AHEAD OF MARCOS (AMBROSE) WHEN THAT YELLOW FLAG WAS ON THE CORNER? DIDN’T THEY SAY THAT IF THE YELLOW FLAG WAS OUT?
“You always go back to your position, if you get spun out. And Marcos spun me under the caution, or whatever his name is. They originally told me to go back to second place and I went back to second place. Then they said to go back to 13th place or 14th place or something like that. I was never running 13th or 14th, so I don’t know what to say.”
DID YOU WIN THIS RACE?
“I completed the most laps, I was first car to complete them. I won the race. You guys can say that I got in the back of him over here, he got in the back of me over there. It’s just a huge disappointment. We worked real hard on our road course program and we came here to win the race and that’s what we did. If they’re going to say we finished two laps, I guess we finished two laps down; they make the rules.”
Guess Robby forgot about the Black Flag rule, ignore it at your peril.
UPDATE: At this point NASCAR is still looking at L’affaire Robby Gordon and will make an announcement if he will be allowed to start Sunday’s Cup event in the morning.
Oh bien, tels est la vie o
