Has NASCAR’s “fickle finger of fate” been pointed at Speed Channel?

The Winston-Salem Journal is reporting Jim Liberatore head of Speed Channel will be leaving the cable outlet. He has cited the ever popular excuse, “a difference in philosophies” for his departure. Gee if you fail to hear that a few times a week you ain’t listening:

A shake-up at the top of Fox’s Speed Channel is the latest TV shock for NASCAR, and Fox’s decision to let Jim Liberatore go as head of the cable channel leaves considerable uncertainty about just what’s going on.

Liberatore has been running Speed Channel, based in Charlotte, since Fox bought it four years ago. He cites “a difference in philosophies” for his departure.

According to one source, Liberatore wanted to diversify Speed Channel again, to include a good mix of all racing. It has become predominantly NASCAR-oriented.

There are also reports that the Speed Channel ’s NASCAR Nation show will soon be dramatically revamped, in light of generally poor ratings. The show is likely to be cut from an hour to 30 minutes, and its focus is to change from hard racing reports to more soft entertainment features.

Inquiring conspiracy theorists want to know:

Is this related to NASCAR head Mike Helton’s the recent lunacy? Helton had confronted Chris Long, Speed

  1. Conspiracy? I doubt it. Wanting to run a networking showing something worth watching? Probably. Ever try to sit through “NASCAR Nation?” Scintillating entertainment and/or informative it is not.

As to Helton’s dust-up with the show, it’s apparent he never reads anything at That’s Racin’, or else not only would he have known from whence the story originated, but also would have found far more there over which to get agitated for a reason. Considering these are the people who consider Rantville to be something worthy of public attention… enough said.

  2. I don’t believe their is any conspiracy either, hence the question mark. And I must admit living in the Philippines I wouldn’t mind having the chance to see NASCAR Nation even if it is crap on wheels. Something is better than near nothing. As it is the NEXTEL Cup races are broadcast on average 6-8 hours after the fact.

Needless to say I avoid the sports programs and online sites so as to not spoil “the effect.”

  3. NASCAR OVERDOSE!! No wonder Jim Liberatore quit. When I started watching Speed, there was enough VARIETY in the shows so I could leave it on all day. Now I just SHUT SPEED OFF & go do something else.

  4. Hmmm…
well it has become nascar vision.so did he leave or is he still there??
