Speed TV Floating NASCAR Rumors

Take these two items posted by Speed TV for what they’re worth, which could be a lot, or they could be similar to what the software design community calls “Vaporware.”

1. Between now and the end of the 2008 season, Scott Speed likely will make his Sprint Cup debut. I’d rate this one a definite possibility and Red Bull will likely field a third team to get Speed some Sprint Cup starts before a full on assault on Rookie of the Year in 2009.

2. Speed is also reporting before end of the current season, Joey “The Phenom” Logano likely will make his Sprint Cup debut. He is expected to get his feet wet in a few races with the #96 Hall of Fame Racing team.

This seems to be somewhat less likely although it makes some sense. My first thought is why? Gibbs has the wherewithal to field a forth car under the Gibbs banner.

On the other hand HoF is a satellite of Gibbs Racing and they could use the help. BUT, if true where does that leave Brad Coleman who was just signed by HoF presumably to get his feet wet as their regular driver in 2009?

  1. Scott Speed already told us as much on INSIDE ARCA two weeks ago.He said several.

I’ve read Logano will be in an #02 Home Depot ride, starting with Richmond, with perhaps five starts total.

  2. The big question will be if Red Bull dumps AJ Allmendinger to put Speed in the 84 or they add a third car for 09.

I believe Slice Bread Logano is supposed to make his Cup debut at Richmond in a few weeks.

And another rumor making the rounds says Childress is going to buy out another team in the top 35 so Bowyer will have an automatic qualifying spot in the 33 at Daytona.

  3. George, I remember Speeds comment about his Sprint debut and the reason why I counted this rumor as likely. I don’t see them dropping Allmendinger either, Dietrich Mateschitz has pretty deep pockets I see him forming a third team. (Or buying HoF?)

As for Logano at HoF… horse dung, it makes no sense.

  4. The only infinitesimally possible reason I could even see Logano in the 96 car would be if they made a run to the top 35 in owner points and Logano had a stroke of bad luck qualifying due to rainout or crash. Right now the 96 team is about what, 250 out from the 35th spot, which it seems JGR realized was a pretty steep climb and thus put Logano in the 02 car and will let his talent try to get him in the field.
