Staten Island, Kiss NASCAR’s Grits!
I’ve been an advocate for this for over a year, maybe it will happen. Soon.
NASCAR is considering moving its annual Nextel Cup awards banquet from New York City to Las Vegas and the change could occur as soon as this season, The Charlotte Observer has learned.
Mark Dyer, NASCAR’s vice president of licensing, was among NASCAR and Las Vegas Motor Speedway officials who met in December with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority about the possibility, multiple sources said Tuesday.
Also Tuesday, NASCAR’s vice president for racing operations, Steve O’Donnell, told NASCAR Scene that the site of this year’s awards banquet had not been finalized.
NASCAR officials were not immediately available for further comment.
Oops! More fallout for New York’s rejection of ISC’s plans for a Staten Island race track. In addition to the “Islanders” losing an opportunity to gain revenue from a parcel of land no one else desired, or had the wherewithal to develop, they may lose the millions the annual banquet brings.
Excuse me while I shed a tear…
…of joy!
And Brian France sends his regards to NY and postscripts: “Kiss NASCAR’s Grits!”

Yayy!!! Some sense has come to the NASCAR world!!!
I agree, but not just based on retribution for rejecting the track in NYC.
NY has never embraced the sport as envisioned by ISC or the sanctioning body. And it was obvious they never would have.
In addition, although a move to LV isn’t going back to the “roots,” getting out of NY may blunt the criticism.
Moving the banquet to LV was suggested in my blog last November, although I thought Atlanta would be better.
SF… After knockin’ enough dust off of the cranium I remember you coming out in favor of the Los Wages move for the banquet.
