Teasing F1 Fans, Let's Count the Ways

Setting aside for the moment most F1 fans wouldn’t be adverse to seeing a few more teams on the starting grid. Reports suggest the 2010 grid is officially open to three new teams added to the 10 in this years championship.

Assuming Ferrari, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso don’t bolt for parts unknown, in which case there would be 5 teams and 10 cars on the 2010 starting grid.

Or is it 8 teams and 16 starters with the three additions? It’s all so, so very confusing.

And if you think that’s confusing, I suspect a butt-load of fans are getting tired and confused by the almost daily pronouncements by F1 wannabes looking at a “new and improved,” and budget F1 as a venue of choice.

Whether they all file official entries with the FIA[sco] is a whole ‘nother matter. Personally I think some are operating under delusions or grandeur and dreaming while clutching their Dream Catchers. But that’s just me.

For lack of a better term, and so it follows my made-up for no reason title, lets call the following list of F1 wannabes - The Teasers - because you just know that’s what many of them are.

1. David Richards-led Prodrive/Aston Martin/UAE-branded bid.
2. North Carolina-based US GPE.
3. British marque Lola.
4. GP2 Series front-runner iSport International.
5. Mark Gallagher’s newly-crowned A1GP Champions Team Ireland.
6. IndyCar’s Penske Racing.
7. IndyCar’s Andretti Green Racing

As if that isn’t enough Joan Villadelprat who currently runs the sportscar outfit Epsilon Euskadi is quoted by the Spanish newspaper Marca as expressing interest in joining the fray.

“I have the site, the wind tunnel with the appropriate scale, the determination, everything,” Said Villadelprat, who has had a long history in F1.

Villadelprat has held key spots in F1 teams at Minardi, Benetton, Ferrari, McLaren, Tyrrell, Benetton and Prost.

Yeah, Prost Grand Prix, not sure I’d put them on my resume (Jarno Trulli has come along way from that disaster hasn’t he?), but I’m not the one clutching a Dream Catcher either.

Who among this group are Teasers, or worse posers, remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure they all can’t join the party.

Unless five of the biggest “guests” decide to take their party favors and go home.

One final thing, I almost forgot. All the dreams aren’t centered on 2010, oh no, some are looking to 2011 also.

Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon, owner of defending GP2 Series champions Racing Engineering is supposedly working on an entry for the 2011 championship season.

Yeah OK, so am I, I can play that game to.

Myself, along with FT’s Brain Room™, are filing an official entry for the 2010 F1 season. The team, to be named FTBM (Full Throttle Bankrupt Motors), is to be cobbled together from the remnants of post government take-over of General Motors and Chrysler.

Hey! Stop that chuckling, they laughed about the Lotus/Cosworth 4WD F1 too.

Oops, bad example, never-mind.

  1. I bet we get our team entry in before you: FMNC Racing. (FastMachines No Cash). Plenty of room for sponsor logs, I’d suggest any interested parties sign up early.

  2. Yeah well, you and FM has been ahead of the FT Brain Room in many ways and on many occasions.

That said, my entry is designed to kiss the backside, as opposed to beating the hell out of it, of ecco-warrior Mad Max with a highly efficient non-polluting powerplant.

  3. I think Lola, Prodrive & de Orleans-Borbon are genuine prospects if they can find funding.

I’m stunned that usual “lodge an entry” F1 prospect, Adam Khan, A1GP Pakistan has not put his hand up like he normally does..clown.

In fairness to Villadelprat he does have an excellent facility.

  4. Oh BTW, if FTBM or FMNC do make the grid. I’ve got dibs on being the rear jackman (no chance of getting run over by the rent-a-driver management will surely hire) & interviewing the promo girls.

  5. There’s a couple reports that Lola is definitely filing an entry before the deadline.

As for the FTBM crew, we could use a new jackoff, er… I mean new jackman. But for the sake of our capped budget would you be interested in filling in as both?

Not sure what FMNC needs but rumor has it a position as Head-Cleaner for their expansive motorcoach is open.
