Trivia: Air Transportation Edition

As much as old goats like myself, or the likes of James Hilton, still pine for the days of dragging your stock car into a speedway on a rollback or flat bed trailer they are long past. (but far from forgotten)

I’ve touched on NASCAR’s Fly Boys previously (Helicopters, Greg Biffle & dog sperm - Oh My?!) but what inspired this edition of trivia is a piece in the Dover press about the air traffic into and out of the Dover area this weekend.

Would you believe on Thursday alone 61 planes carrying team members flew into Dover, including Roush-Fenway Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing and Hendrick Motorsports. And while on the subject of dogs, part of Kyle Busch’s entourage on arrival were two dogs of unknown heritage.

Added to the air traffic is the Goodyear Blimp that will be based at nearby Sussex County Airport for the weekend.

As for this edition of trivial trivia…

Which NASCAR driver is generally credited with being the first to fly from race to race? (I believe he owned his own plane but have been unable to confirm it)

He went by various nicknames one that isn’t a dead give away is “____” (Oops, nevermind Google was not my friend). He was the first driver to earn over $100,000 in a single season and was so dominate one year he entered only 29 of the scheduled 61 events yet still finished third in the points standings.

There you have it, a bit of air traffic courtesy of NASCAR’s Fly Boys and this weeks trivia for dessert.

  1. Curtis Turner?

  2. After humiliating myself in the video trivia, I got nothin’ to lose.

David Pearson, the silver fox…I hope

  3. Charlie, there is no humiliation to be had here. Just a little mocking and rib poking. And no it’s not the silver fox, nor is it Curtis Turner.

Both are excellent guesses and as an added clue this driver out dueled Curtis Turner to win the Rebel 300 at Darlington.

The year I’ll keep to myself as it would be too easy to look up the results.

    Oops… is that a clue?

  4. Fred Lorenzen? I didn’t think those guys flew back then. Great quiz.

  5. As far as I know Fred “Golden Boy” Lorenzen was the first and at the time the only one.

NASCAR’s cars Fly Boys really didn’t hit V2 Speed until about the time the Jeff Gordon era started.
