Trivia: The Mustang Edition

Trivia: The Mustang Edition

With the recent unveiling of the Roush NNS Mustang, and a complete inability to come-up with something more suitable to write, I offer the following for your enjoyment and hopefully puzzlement.

This 1969 Trans Am Mustang was a winner of 101 road course events during it’s reign of terror that lasted from 1969-1972.

It was written the car “exploded into view like a brilliant red starburst and roared past in a blur of colour and noise. It was like nothing ever seen before and along with its driver would rock motor sport to its very foundations in the years to come.”

Trans Am rules limited engine capacity to five liters so Ford powered the Mustang with a newly developed small block 302 cubic inch V8 they called the Boss 302. It had a single four barrel Holley carburetor but local rules where it was raced allowed a switch to four Weber downdraft carburetors.

One final bit of info, the car was built by Kar Kraft, Ford’s American racing division and then sent to Ford’s factory-backed race teams for final race preparation. That preparation took place at the race shops of famed NASCAR constructor Bud Moore.

“I sat in a motel room in northern Detroit for four days waiting for the phone to ring to tell me yes or no,” the driver. “Then I got the call to go to Bud Moore’s to pick up the car. It was the greatest thing that ever happened to me as I was virtually penniless at the time. I had a return ticket in my pocket and enough to keep me going for a couple of weeks but that was it.”

So, who was the driver of this excellent example of early to mid-seventies Trans-Am racing?

NOTE: Peter, me thinks you might have a slight edge over most of my readership. So back-off for a while. For the rest of you, Peter is Australian, which should give you a slight clue as to the driver and where it was raced.
