Under the Sprint/Nextel Radar

The amalgamation of Sprint/Nextel brings to mind all sorts of images. Like irate NASCAR fans. Fallout in the form of lawsuits and overpriced do-dads for grandstand listening of your favorite driver pissin’ his firesuit as he’s spun by the driver you hate so much.

But did you know…

A relationship between Sprint/Nextel and the Richmond, Va. school district has resulted in a windfall of $25,000?

A short-term lease agreement provided Sprint/Nextel with temporary access to a schools-owned television frequency. The frequency was used to rebroadcast the Sept. 7 and 8 races at RIR using new mobile technology they rolled out during the weekend races.

Ultimately $25,000 pocketed by Richmond Public Schools is destined to go into an account to pay for Americans with Disabilities Act improvements and upgrades to schools facilities.

A much better deal than overpriced do-dads I’d say.

  1. That’s an interesting little tidbit of information. In a sports world where the high dollar sponsor wins the bid and ultimately tends to result in sub-par product return to the almighty fan, I’d say that this is rather refreshing to see.

Of course, I’m sure Nextel, Sprint, or NASCAR would all individually be able to just straight up donate four times that amount to the cause without losing a wink of sleep at night, but hey - that’s besides the point. ;)

  2. That is a good story. Always nice to see some good happening.

  3. That is cool. Great to hear it.
