V8 Supercar Champ Looks to Future
V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup says his unprecedented winning streak is making it hard for him to decide his racing future.
For the edification of all you knuckle-dragging, NASCAR-centric, beer-swilling Yanks reigning Australian V8 champ Jamie Whincup is what the kids call now-a-days - The Bomb.
He burst into the top ranks of Supercars last year winning his first championship and continued his tarmac scorching pace through the first three events this year.
To date, at the hands of the capable 26-year-old, Team Vodafone has 14 wins from the last 17 V8 Supercar championship races, a winning percentage unmatched in the history of the sport.
Pssst! Whincup’s contract is up at the end of this season.
Whincup’s manager Matt Cousins reportedly turned down an offer to race at this years edition of the Le Mans 24hr event.
“The better I go here, the more I achieve my goals, the more I want new challenges,” Whincup said.
“But then again the more established you get in Australia, the tougher it gets to walk away, so that’s a tough one to balance. “It’s all pretty much up in the air at the moment.
“I love my V8s, I love Australia but I’m very jealous of my friends who have had the opportunity to drive cars overseas.
“At the moment, don’t get me wrong, my full focus is on driving my Vodafone as quickly as I can this year and what happens after that is yet to be decided.”
Did I mention Whincup is a Ford driver?
Did I mention one of his friends is Kangaroo Meat who used his deep Ford connections to make his way into NASCAR?
Legend and former V8 Supercar champion Mark Skaife, who enjoyed his own period of dominance while winning the 2000, 2001 and 2002 titles, says if Whincup is to go overseas, now is the time.
“That’s an absolutely personal one for Jamie, if he wants to drive something else overseas then the timing for doing that is running out, you need to go and do that before your early 30s,” he said.
No time like the present I always say, when the goins’ good, get going!
Unfortunately Whincup being a road race ringer is out of the question, NASCAR’s Sonoma and Watkins Glen dates conflict with Whincup being at Sandown and Queensland respectively.
But wait, I have an Evil Backup Plan.
Whincup-Ford.
Roush-Ford
Roush one team over the 4 car limit for 2010.
Roush-Whincup-the #26 Ford-Crown Royal sponsorship, and ship the whole kit & kabootle to Yates Racing for the 2010 season.
I love it when a plan comes together!
I “love it” when I have a throbbing headache and can’t think straight also. But that’s beside the point.
Oh, and I love Kool-Aide also, while wearing my foil hat.
