Wallace’s Son Wins Snowball Derby

S teve Wallace enjoyed having the most dominant car in Saturday night’s 37th Snowball Derby. During the final sprint to the checkered flag at Five Flags Speedway, the heralded 17-year-old son of NASCAR Nextel Cup legend Rusty Wallace pulled away from the field to win by 15 car lengths. Pensacola’s Eddie Mercer finished second, a remarkable accomplishment considering the woes he encountered after starting 24th.

Steve Wallace, son of NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace, won the Snowball Derby on Saturday at Five Flags Speedway. Mercer was involved in a lap-67 altercation with rookie Joey Miller and former two-time champion Gary St. Amant. Later, while avoiding a multi-car crash in Turn 4, Mercer had to stop, back up, then creep slowly down pit road to stay on the lead lap.

Mercer eventually fell a lap down before motoring his way back into contention late in the race. But his ill-handling Chevrolet couldn’t keep pace with the resource-laden No. 5 Ford of Wallace through the final green-flag run.
