  1. As a long-time NASCAR fan, but johnny-come-lately hockey fan (thanks to our Nashville Predators), I love that Carpentier showed up in a Habs sweater. Matter of fact, I’m glad Gillette is now a Cup owner. I see NHL being in much the same position Cup was in mid 80s - known and supported by a fairly sizable niche market but without a ton of growth. But NASCAR found its mojo and took off…big-time. Huge run-up in ratings, seats, sponsorship packages, technology, TV deals, celeb status, etc. I’ve really grown to love hockey over the last decade. I’m hoping Gillette will take the marketing expertise NASCAR has demonstrated (although perhaps in the middle of destroying) and partner it with NHL markets. NASCAR and NHL share common markets in south Florida, LA, Atlanta, DFW, Chicago area, Pocono/Philly, upstate NY, Detroit, Boston/NH, Phoenix, NoCal, St.Louis (Busch…ERRR…Nationwide) & Montreal (ditto). Not sure hockey purists want the increased exposure for fear of ruining the core product. Sound familiar?

  2. baby, you be sure to call me when alex zanardi announces his nextel ( orwhatever nextyear’s sponsor is) intentions. he’s got to come out of the post cart/champcar/touring woodwork sometime.

  3. TMC - as a “johnny-come-lately” Preds fan you must be a bit peeved after watching the two Ducks rookies rip up your team last night “-)

The NHL was the last major sport I supported in the US beside auto racing but the year long lock out by the owners soured me on them as well. I still keep an eye on the sport but not as much as I used to. As for the rest, I could care less, I couldn’t tell ya who the current Stupid Bowl champ is.

  4. verasaki - Zanardi in NASCAR? Sure why not he’s done fairly well in DTM. It’s gotta be a bit easier to run a hand control NASCAR than a DTM on road courses

  5. My Preds are in deep dooky. Losing to Cup winning Ducks is least of their concerns. Getting upset about that would be akin to Robby Gordon worried about losing to Jeff Gordon - they’re in different zip codes so hard to be too upset. What I’m worried about is losing the team altogether as well as the overall problems the league faces. Kind of like Wood Bros. wondering if they’ll be able to keep the lights on. But agree with you on one thing - labor problems, lock outs, and strikes in professional sports of all kinds is a joke. Unbelievable when you see owners and players both in the upper .5% of wage earners in the world squabbling who deserves to get more.

  6. For the most part the money made doesn’t bother me. The players only get what the idiot owners are willing to part with.

My main complaint is the MLB whistling thru the graveyard for over a decade on the steroid issue and the NBA and NFL both doing nothing about the criminals that infest their sports.

Thankfully both are finally doing something but it’s far too late for me. I’m gone for good and glad I have such a clean sport as NASCAR to follow.
