What’s Up With Those “Overnight” Ratings?
Or more correctly, what’s down with them?
SCENE Daily is reporting NBC’s broadcast of Sunday’s Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway earned a 3.9 overnight rating and an 8 share. That overnight rating from the nation’s largest television markets is down 7.1 percent from 4.2 last year.
Well OK then . But overnights were reported as down about 4% for the Kansas Chase event. The full report gave a 7% increase in viewership. The same for Martinsville. Overnights had a decrease, the final Nielsen Media Research numbers show a 4.7 rating and a 10 share. That rating is 6.8 percent higher than the 4.4 the race drew for the network last year.
On the other hand Charlotte’s overnights were higher than 2004 and the final report had them higher still.
What the hell do you believe? Your lying eyes or the lying Nielsen Media Research outfit. The overall trend seems to be increased NASCAR TV ratings, maybe. Or maybe we should all chuck the baby, the bath water and any TV ratings reporting out the window.
