Who Remembers the NASCAR “Tire War?”
Back in the day, when men were men, boys were boys and girls sported less silicone the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company faced competition from an unlikely source.
The small Mid-Western based Hoosier Tire Company owned by Bob Newton entered Winston Cup and started supplying tires to Cup teams in 1988. Opening the year 10 teams started the Daytona 500 on Hoosiers. Bobby Allison won that event on Goodyears but the Hoosier shod teams didn’t embarrass themselves either.
The point was made the following two events as the late Neil Bonnet won at Richmond after being two laps down and the following week at Rockingham. Goodyear
