Would You Like a Little Whine…
… with that cheese?
Prior to NBC/TNT taking over the broadcast package this weekend anchor Bill Weber decided to lob a couple shot across the bow of the departing Fox Sports.
“You will see drivers and the teams instead of the announcers,” Weber said during a conference call with reporters. “More than likely in the postrace, you might just get race-related questions instead of just like little fun bits after it’s over.”
I can’t say I disagree. And I suppose even though NBC has been shown the door after the ‘06 season it’s never too late to improve the breed so to speak. But color me doubtful.
I remember some pretty damn stupid questions from the NBC’s bobbleheads last year as well. The reality is they all formulate stupid questions. I think it’s a required extra credit seminar for those taking Journalism 101 in college.
We’ll see what happens. I suspect the only major difference will be the absence of the psuedo-Wallys World car that Fox stole. But I have to say it. Even the return of the real Wally’s World will be tainted the first week. The ride along will be Will Farrell pimping his non-sensical NASCAR flic.
And in other notes: ISC’s Chief Operating Officer John Saunders claims both the Washington and Staten Island tracks are still in the pipeleine but may be delayed until 2011. Speaking of the NYC track he said the delay in trying to get the political backing necessary for approval was a “slow-moving process.”
Call me a pessimist, but the last meeting held on New Yorks “bald headed step child” ended in a near riot. There was nothing slow moving about that meeting. Police were called, political tongues were wagging and even a few barking moonbats made an appearance.
Today’s must read is an excerpt from Diecast Dude’s book Restrictor Plate This, it’s an excellent selection and hey… it’s free.
Question; Will Tony Stewart follow the same formula that he has the last two years entering the Chicagoland event? Before you answer better look at history. In ‘05 and ‘04 Tony started Chicagoland in a backup car after crashing in practice. Tony won the ‘05 event and finished 5th in ‘04 after starting from the back of the field.
BREAKING: The speculation is over. UPS has moved it’s sponsorship bucks to Michael Waltrip racing and will adorn the hood of Dale Jarrett’s ride.
NASCAR, NEXTEL Cup, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip Racing, Auto Racing, Motorsports, Full Throttle

Thank you, sir! Compliment greatly appreciated.
As to ISC’s pipe dream concerning where they’d like to build tracks, the city of Oakland will build new stadiums for the Raiders and A’s before you see one shovelful of earth turned in either Washington or New York. And the city of Oakland will never build a new stadium for either team. Never.
I agree NYC is out, but the Governor of WA has come out in support of the Kitsap project so there is some hope, if only a little.
I don’t particularly care for Fox’s splash and dazzle coverage myself and it will be great to have Benny Parsons back on the air!
As long as any new track is a short track like Richmond I hope they get built. No more 1.5 mile cookie cutter tracks, Please! Local politics will prevail with most of these proposed tracks.
I,m a bit prejudiced on the subject of Benny. Many people don’t like him and understand their reasoning.
However my history with Benny goes back to the days of him and then teammate Danny Bird racing twin 1959 Edsels (#09 and #08) on a local Detroit dirt track.
The 1 1/2 mile tracks can be made good venues, Homestead is an example. From an owners perspective they are the best way to go from being cheaper to build, to giving the fans the best possible view of the whole track.
I doubt very much if they go away anytime soon as you can see by this planned speedway.
