Yea Right, How Will That Work?

After Ricky Craven lost his [avatar:http://cranialcavity.net/files/cts.gif]Craftsman Truck Series[/avatar] ride with Roush Racing he’s been looking for a [avatar:http://cranialcavity.net/files/cup.jpg]NEXTEL Cup[/avatar] ride. The offers haven’t exactly rolled in.

“I’ve had some opportunities in the Busch and Truck series but I’ve made it clear I want to get back to the Nextel Cup Series next year and I want it to be a quality opportunity,” said the 39-year-old Craven on Tuesday.

He acknowledges his strategy comes with a risk.

“I could be left standing [without a ride] when the music stops. I’ve put myself in that position,” said Craven, one of just 15 drivers to have won races in the Cup (2 wins), Busch (4) and truck (1) series.

“Everybody in this sport has something to sell,” said Craven. “What I have to sell is that I have won in every series. I have won as recently as two years ago in the Nextel Cup Series with a single-car team. To a team that hasn’t been to Victory Lane or hasn’t won in a considerable period of time, I think I have some value. I know I can win again.”

Say good-by Ricky.

Seven wins across three series in 467 starts isn’t exactly a strong selling point. Sitting out a year obviously isn’t an option either, he’ll be 40 next Silly Season. Being idle a year only adds to the problem. If he intends to stay as an active driver something less than a “quality opportunity” will have to be considered.

NASCAR, NEXTEL Cup, Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series

  1. “quality opportunity” is the key phrase there.
he should be invited back to the 32, bobby jr hasnt done any thing good there and nothing close to what ricky was doing. the fact that he beat kurt busch in one of the greatest finishes of all time, i think, is a good selling point. there are several teams in cup that could use even an occasional win, but i wouldnt consider any of them “quality rides”

  2. The Cal Wells operation is far from quality. He came into the sport with a good business plan but it just hasn’t jelled.

Craven only had 2 wins there, the only 2 Wells wins, and no one else has come close. If Craven wants a good ride it won’t be in ‘06 unless someone gets fired in the next few weeks and I don’t see that happening.
