Your Pick to Play King Richard on Film?

Screenwriters Christopher Cleveland and Bettina Gilois, who had great success with the Disney film, Glory Road, are working on a film based upon the life of NASCAR legend Richard Petty.

Plans call for the film to be “transgenerational”, and follow the legend through various parts of his life. Cleveland and Gilois are looking at Randy Quaid to portray Petty “in his later years,” whatever that means. The assumption here is Quaid would be the “post driving years Petty,” but I could be wrong.

I have nothing against Quaid as Petty and he did look rather “Petty-esque” wearing a cowboy hat in The Long Riders. I just hope it reaches, or exceeds, the quality of Glory Road and doesn’t do the King’s memory a disservice.

  1. randy quaid?! richard petty isn’t that fat. and all i think of when i see randy quaid is him peeing on the street outside of clark griswald’s house. he’s terrible. if this happens, i think “talladega handsome” or whatever that movies being called now would be the better of the two nascar movies.

  2. Surely you jest Kevin. Actors have been known to put on or take off hundreds of pounds for certain roles. Not that it matters. While having a resemblence to the real character would be a plus for any movie it doesn’t happen very often in Hollywood.

BTW if you had read just three posts down you would have learned “talledega handsoms,” as you call it, has a title now.

If you think a Petty bio flic would be less entertainment value than Ferrell’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky and Bobby I’m not sure what to tell ya.

  3. I think tom hawks should play Richard Petty in the moive.

EDIT: Lines were added to maintain page formatting - ed.

  4. Is it easier to make a young guy look old, or the other way around? I think the former, and therefore if in charge of casting I would pick…..
Len DiCaprio! Check out his facial lines, add a ’stache, straw Stetson and some good ‘ole boy slang and you’ve got “The king”!

Hey, if he can play Howard Hughes he can pull off any challenge. That’s why they call it “acting.”

  5. One other choice. Tom Hanks. Same chin, and he’d love the challenge!

  6. DiCaprio is a bit short I think and like “Kevin” above who can’t get over “randy quaid’s appearence with “clark griswald” I see and hear nothing but DiCaprio screaming I’m King of the World.

But I can buy into the Tom Hanks idea. He seems able to play any part with ease.
